..the Price of a Turkey!?

This week the photo below showed up in my inbox of one of my email accounts.  This photo was  taken in Arctic Bay...(this hasn't been verified..and perhaps it was just a 'mistake'...but still a funny one?!)hehee

Here's the Stats on this bird....(in case you can't see it in the photo):
11.115kg net weight at $18.00/kg which makes the TOTAL price = $200.07
I  hope that bird is a GRADE A Turkey!! (and it better stuff and cook itself too-and prehaps clean up the kitchen after dinner!!)

So this got me thinking... how much does a turkey go for in Pang?! hmmmmm I went down to the store las night to do some shopping for food... and took this photo below.....
The Stats of Pang's Bird is:
8.420 kg net weight at $6.89/kg forthe TOTAL price of $58.01!!!

I talked to my Mum last night... and asked how much her turkey cost... and she laughed at my inquiry but I just told her I was doing 'research'.... The stats of the 'Bird' that my brothers, sister-in-laws, nephews and mum will enjoy later tonight are:    8.03kg net weight at $2.18/kg for the TOTAL price of $17.51

....puts it all into perspective... hope you enjoy your turkey this weekend wherever you find yourself...
Have a HAPPY and SAFE THANKSGIVING!!!

I'm not one to really be aware of 'dates' but I just realized that...
6months ago........

....I was sitting on a plane heading to Pangnirtung,
(via Toronto->Montreal->Kuujuuaq-> Iqaluit->Pang)
....here's a photo from my 'early' days in Pang!....

...after my 'first' walk across the bridge to the Northern...then I thought the walk was SOOOO long (but really it isn't that long--unless you are my Mum!)This was in the time that I thought that I lived SO far away from everything...and how I thougth all the prices of food were CRAZY ... and how I told myself I would "never ever buy a box ice cream for $14.00"...hmmmm well that hasn't stayed true for the 6Months(what can I say?-I like icecream!)...I must admit that the 'shock' of prices aren't so bad these days--and I've adapted to buying what I need, and trying not to look at the prices--but there are somethings I just don't buy! ...my first walk on the sound.....

here I am.. today... 6months later... with a bit longer hair...that has changed colours yet again--thanks for the sunshine of the summer months....

But I am still LOVING the adventure of living in the ARCTIC, not really wanting to go 'south' anytime soon!

This has been brewing a long time….

While I was hiking on Mt. Duval last Sunday I was talking with a new friend. We had met on Canada day and hung out a bit, it’s always amazing how ‘fast’ people can become a friend when you are travelling or living in remote places! Anyways I had mentioned how I’m always so hard on myself. Often thinking garbage thoughts about myself, and putting myself down because I’m a huge, awkward, F-Ugly(my personal combo of Fat and Ugly)…and well there are a whole bunch of other really amazing words I could choose to put in here that I use to describe myself but frankly that’s not the point. After I went on that ‘tirade’ I ended it by saying, “And I’m really trying not to think these things, it’s just so darn hard because part of it is true…I am a larger person and I HATE how the society we live in looks at ‘larger’ people frankly it’s not fair! Even though I think I’m the ‘most’ fit obese person I know! I mean how many others my shape and size could climb a MOUNTAIN that is 671m high-not ONCE but 2 times in 3 weeks!??—in like 4 hours up and back!?” She just looked at me and said, “Well there is ONE thing you can change-if you really want to.” I’ve been thinking about that statement since.

Part of me wanted to scream out; I’ve been trying for so long I can’t even remember NOT trying to change! I mean I’ve worked out with a trainer give or take 4 years—(who has become an amazing friend and mentor!)… This seems like something I’ve fought for so long—high school or even before that. Part of me is afraid to type this because I’m afraid I will never change, I’ll always be that ‘bigger’ girl and then it will be just another ‘failed attempt’ to add to the pile of many times I've said... "I WILL DO THIS". But it seems different right now... I totally feel like NOW is the time for change--almost like it's NOW or NEVER. For that reason I am sitting here typing this and sharing it with you—perhaps some of you might think this is inappropriate on such a ‘public’ forum but frankly I think I need to type it and post it as if to ‘claim’ it and make it happen.

So how have I been making it happen?? I've decided couch surfing isn't going to do it!! This week I’ve been walking at 7am with a friend…the first two days I woke her up with a ring of the doorbell and today was my turn! It is great to get out and walk at that time of day, it’s so quiet we walk about an hour then come back and get ready to go to work for 8:30am! It’s been a great routine and I hope to keep it up—because already this week I’ve NOTICED the difference in me at work. I have extra energy in the morning and am not dragging my feet so much!

Tonight I was sitting watching So You Think You Can Dance? and I got this urge to go for a run.(which is kind of weird and new for me--but i'm not quite at a 'full' run it's more of a jog and walk!) I looked outside at the sun it was shining brightly in my living room—it’s been so warm today (15C)…so I said to myself I’ll go at 10pm when the show is over. Then I was like NO I can tape the rest of the show but I need to go now when I have this urge to run. So that's what I did. I ended up running/walking/jogging (yes I’m not quite there for a full run for 30mins, I’m not sure I’ll ever be but I enjoy my glimpses of what is it like to run!) to the point on the road to where we walk in the morning. How long did this run/walk take you might ask? If in the morning I do it in an hour? Well tonight I did it in 30mins pretty darn good considering I didn’t ‘run’ the whole thing….

I guess I’m sharing this because it’s still a struggle—sit on the couch or go for a run and watch the sun dip behind the mountains? I sure hope this becomes less of a struggle…and my hope is that I stop feeling so yucky about myself. I like to think that I hide my insecurities well—and others of you know my struggles because I’ve vented to you about them over the years. I’m working on it—one step at a time, one foot in front of the other. But it’s still going to be hard… thanks for listening, and supporting me...

Last night I went to bed hearing the sounds of rain hitting the roof....it was really peacefull.
Then this morning I woke up, was stumbling along in my house, the power had gone off last night, and was restored and when I was in the shower it went off again..so it was already ONE of THOSE mornings! I was still trying to wake up.... as I was cooking my breakfast ... I opened the blind above my kitchen sink and well was shocked......

what did I see you might ask?

SNOW!!! it was a Winter(er..perhaps Summer should be a better word) Wonderland!....that's right... it's June 17th and it's SNOWING!!! Yahoo for the Arctic... (perhaps the past week's weather WAS summer...now I'm back in winter!) ;)

3 Random Things....

1. This photo was taken Thursday at 11:52pm....bring on the midnight sun!!
2. No photo for this one...but I learned a little lesson on Saturday.... NOT to put out the garbage in my pjs while I was cooking bacon... Just so you get the FULL mental picture of what happened I'd first like to describe my pjs...are you ready? Think ripped pj bottoms that are OK to sleep in..but not be seen in public, a white spagetti strapped tank top... thankfully I pulled on a hoodie at the last minute on my feet were just my slippers....) So you might ask..why don't you put out your garbage WHILE cooking bacon? Well it's b/c you might get LOCKED out of your house...HOW? well that could be due to the HIGH wind slams the door shut.....(as you are coming UP the stairs after successfully putting the trash in the trash box).... Now don't get too full of panic...there were NO flames or BURNING at any point in time at my house.... just lots of smoke..... I went to my neighbours... and we tracked down the Housing "emergency/after hours" guy...and he had a master key.. and with a bit of luck and a screw driver we were able to enter my SMOKE filled house and turn off the burner....and open windows to try to get out the smell of charred bacon.... well to be honest... It didn't even smell like bacon at this point---just well Charcoal...and that's all that was left in my frying pan too!!!! So to date my house is still smelling like a place that Cinderella might enjoy.... and NO the fire department OR the RCMP were NOT called at all during this little lesson.... and I won't be leaving the house (even for a minute) in those plaid pjs bottoms again, lesson learned!
3. You can't even see the footprints from when I came in 15mins ago! YES it's been SNOWING here for about 24 hours or soooooo.....I can honestly say it's the first time I've seen snow in MAY!!!! Perhaps I should be happy that it's WARM enough to snow eh? Gotta luv mother nature!!!
... did I mention it's 20 more days til I'm in the south!!!
