Going 'Stir Crazy" in the "little white house" in the Arctic...

This morning, I got up but the plane was cancelled--it was really foggy and windy... so what does a girl do? she eats her breakfast-- oatmeal and an orange... has a bit of 'chit-chat' with the first lady that lived in the "little white house" one night before I arrived...(I would be the "lady in waiting")....after this chit chat...I went back to bed for 3 hours!-- I got up about noon.... had some lunch.. then headed to shopping.... how fun... to the northern!  Then talked to my mum on the phone for like an hour and a half (but been pretty darn BORED)... Last night there was some fear that our cable would go out.. and for a few moments it did... but have no fear we still have that!

I was starting to feel a bit 'stir crazy'... until the 'first lady' of the "little white house" suggested berry picking for some berries to add to the apple crisp for tonight's dinner... I was like.. sure I'll go.... here are some photos of that adventure....

Berries and the snow... look closely you will see them!

View of Cape Dorset...

...picking berries...

...a view of our 'berry' patch...

...CHEESE... man it was windy and COLD!

..yup its a good day!

Toonoo Sharkey was carving outside his house... he was working on a big Char... we talked for a few minutes... he works outside even in the winter!  He's been carving since he was about 10 years old...he comes for a family of carvers... it was pretty neat to stop and see him working in his shop!

..it's going to be a pretty awesome piece when it's finished...

..isn't this the best workshop ever? (well today was a bit cold)!

..better watch out... those construction areas can be might dangerous.... sometimes you might even get whistled at!? who would have thought it...

well that's all from the 'little white house' in the arctic... let's hope that the wind dies down and the plane will come in Sunday at 3:40pm...cross your fingers...and wish with me!

Labour Day Monday....

This morning, (or should I say afternoon--it was one o'clock) Mary called me and asked me if I'd like to join her berry picking. I said sure, but I needed some time to get myself going... ie) eat breakfast...and ummm well get out of bed!?.... I suggested that we meet in half an hour?

Off we went half an hour later-- the snow we got yesterday has just coated the mountains. I have forgotten how pretty the snow is when it just sits on the tops of the mountains!! Here's Mt. Duval--and the tundra is all of colour!
mmmm blue berries!!!...sometimes I couldn't see them, so I moved my position or sat down.. and then there were TONS of them all over!!

...the bottom of my bucket FINALLY was full! Mary picked hers into zip lock baggies...but I brought this 2L ice cream tub...(knowing I wouldn't FILL it!)
Mary getting her fair share of berries....(she her style of picking was a lot of staying on your feet and bending over...to get the berries...)
I was all about kneeling...and getting my pants soaking wet from the tundra...(but by the end... we both were LYING down on our tummies picking away....!)
Can you spot the berries?! there are some in the foreground!?
Ahhhh the Pang Pass... I'll never ever get tired of this view!
It seems every time I do a self portrait without my sunnies on... i get the SQUINTY eye look...no i wasn't worried, or mad or sad.... I just well squint bc it was sunny!
On our way back, I was walking along minding my own business... and well being the clumsy person I am... the lid came OFF my tub (i had it about 3/4 of the way full)...and well 1/2 of my berries ended up on the ground again!!! Mary and I had to 're pick' them all... and we both said it was the "best" berry patch we had seen all day!!! Thanks Mary for helping me repick my berries... I have put them into the freezer and cant' wait to bake with them!!! :)

mmmmm berries!!!!

While we were walking around on Saturday.... we spotted BLUEBERRIES!!!! :)
..they are fairly small---but sooooooooo yummy in the tummy!! Delia, Christine and I picking away..... they are pretty hardy little guys...and even if you step on them..they usually still are O.K. to pick!! These are crow berries...(if I remembered right?!)...... this was like the most AMAZING patch....
..with my finger you can get a bit of perspective of how *big* these berries are... I probably ate more than I put into the bag... Christine says she's going to make something with them.. for Wednesday night....
....Cory even got a bunch!!! I could never get that many in my hand...(they just ended up in my belly way faster than I could keep them in my hand!)
